Applied after the first discount

Shop assistants sometimes apply a coupon before tax and sometimes after. If the receipt looks off by a few percent, that is usually why.

Plain English

How it works

Final price = Original × (1 − Discount ÷ 100)
  1. Multiply the price by the discount rate to get the saving.
  2. Subtract the saving from the original price.
  3. If a second offer applies, run it against the already-reduced price, not the original.
Stacked discounts multiply. 50% off followed by 20% off leaves 0.5 × 0.8 = 0.4 of the price, so the real saving is 60%.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount quickly in my head?

Take 10% by moving the decimal one place left, then scale. 30% of $80 is three lots of $8 = $24.

Do two discounts add together?

No, they multiply. 20% plus 20% is 36% off in total, not 40%.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). $67.49 after 25% off was $89.99.

Is the discount applied before or after tax?

It varies by retailer and region. Use the tax calculator alongside this one to check both orders.
